What is TPO?

TPO is a photoinitiator widely used in gel polish formulations to initiate the polymerization process when exposed to UV or LED light, allowing the gel polish to harden and cure. It is a common ingredient due to its effectiveness in ensuring a fast and durable cure.

What does the NVWA say about TPO?

We received the following statement from the NVWA on 26-06-2025.

From September 1, 2025, you are no longer allowed to sell or use cosmetic products containing TPO. Products purchased before that date may also no longer be used after September 1, 2025. This tightening of the rules is related to new information about the possible risks of this substance.

What are the rules until September 1, 2025?
Until September 1, 2025, the use of TPO is only permitted in products for applying gel nails up to a maximum of 5% TPO. Use is also only for professionals. The use of TPO in other cosmetic products or by consumers is already prohibited both now and after September 1, 2025.

No sell-off period
We expect manufacturers and importers to ensure that products containing TPO are no longer available for sale after September 1, 2025.

Salons
We ask end-users to switch to alternatives as soon as possible. These are already available. Ask your supplier, wholesaler, or trade association about this. From September 1, 2025, salons are no longer allowed to use products containing TPO.

Enforcement
If necessary, we will take enforcement action in a European context.

TPO
The abbreviation TPO stands for Triphenylphosphine Oxide and is also known as diphenyl (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide).

Are The GelBottle products TPO free?

All The GelBottle products we sell will be TPO-free from September 1, 2025.

May I use products containing TPO in my salon after September 1, 2025?

No, the NVWA indicated in the statement they sent us on 2025-06-26 that this is no longer allowed.

Which products do I need for a BIAB treatment?

  • Klear Velvet Scrub
  • The GelBottle BIAB™ (of choice)
  • The GelBottle Extreme shine top coat
  • The GelBottle Liner Brush

Do you need a Base Coat under BIAB?

That depends on the colour; BIAB™ already contains a primer, however, BIAB™ Milky, White and Clear do not contain a primer. Under these 3 types of BIAB™ you should then apply the Clear Rubber Base.

What is the difference between BIAB and All-in One BIAB?

The All-in One BIAB contains 50% less HEMA, which results in fewer heat spikes under the lamp. Additionally, this product already includes a topcoat. However, the All-in One BIAB™ does have a sticky layer. This can be removed with Klear don’t be Tacky.

How do I apply BIAB and HARD BIAB?

We have created a handy step-by-step guide for BIAB and HARD BIAB, showing you how to best apply these products.
